Randy grew up in the northwest Iowa town of Algona, where he played basketball and golf for Garrigan High School. He then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and upon graduation, spent 6 years in the military, serving in a cavalry squadron as a platoon leader and military intelligence officer along the West German border.
Upon resigning from the military, Randy joined AmerUs Life Insurance Company in 1980 and spent 7 years in personal production. He was appointed as a General Agent for AmerUs Life (which became Aviva Life & Annuity Co.) in 1987, a position he held until December 31, 2009. He and Co-General Agent, Doug Marlow, grew their organization to be one of Aviva Life’s largest general agencies and they were the recipient of several GAMA awards over those years.
In 1996, Randy and his former partners formed an organization called Central Financial Group. Besides marketing insurance and investment products, their organization was comprised of four property casualty companies in northwest Iowa. Randy sold his entire interest in CFG when he stepped down as General Agent at the end of 2009. He now works out of his home in West Des Moines, where he continues to work with new and existing clients on their insurance and investment strategies.

On a personal note, Randy and his wife, Sheila, live in West Des Moines and have four boys and one girl. He loves to play golf and occasionally sails. In 1992, he captained a sailboat he had purchased and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and back to commemorate the 500th year anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America.
